A (BRIEF) HISTORY OF AN AUGMENTED REALITY

A team of plastic surgeons, radiologists and IT experts, led by Dr. Benoit Hendrickx, professor of plastic surgery at the Brussels University Hospital (UZ Brussel), wanted to develop a non-invasive, risk-free way to view the human anatomy using augmented reality (AR).

This was in 2018, when the concept of “augmented reality” seemed more like science fiction than a tangible reality. After two years of research, the first AR visualisation prototype took shape. The first step was taken. Research and clinical studies followed.

The outcome? ARtery 3D, the first medical device providing a safe and accurate visualisation of the patient’s arterial facial anatomy, was now both an augmented and tangible reality

Augmented Anatomy is a Belgian start-up company and among the first to implement the use of augmented reality (AR) in the medical world.

Its Founder and CEO, Prof. Dr. Benoit Hendrickx, turned a dream of seeing through someone’s skin into a reality, creating ARtery3D.

Multidisciplinary team

Together with a team of doctors, engineers, and IT-experts, we developed the first AR app that enables you to visualize the unique arterial patient anatomy.
